About Atlantic Salmon
The Most Consumed Fish in the US
Atlantic Salmon is the most consumed fish in the US and has the highest likability rating of all fish. The US is the largest western consumption market for salmon, but imports almost all of its Atlantic Salmon.
Development of domestic supply has been a challenging path. Ocean farming has not been easy to develop and has been subject to a range of environmental concerns, and/or conflicts in the ocean space. Land-based production has potential in the US, but takes time to develop. One of the limiting factors with domestic supply development is reliance on egg imports. Many states apply strict bio-security standards to prevent potential importation of disease from distant locations or escape of non-native strains. In some states, only one approved import source exists. Overall, the lack of domestic egg options imposes risks and limitations in growing a domestic Atlantic Salmon supply in the US.
